Going Up: Hyatt Regency New Orleans Blends Guest Security with Convenience

The revitalized Hyatt Regency New Orleans was designed from the ground up with advanced technology to deliver the utmost in guest security, convenience, and energy efficiency. In an industry-first, Hyatt used RFID keycards to guide guests smoothly through the property and establish a new level of access control.

The property implemented a new RFID guest door locking system from Kaba Saflok networked to the busy eight-car Schindler elevator system. The systems communicate to admit keycard holders only to guestroom floors while ensuring faster elevator service at the high-volume convention hotel. An added benefit is less power consumption thanks to more efficient elevator operations.

Hyatt’s focus on security and convenience
David Fifer, the director of engineering, Hyatt Regency New Orleans, said, “Hyatt Regency New Orleans is the city’s premier meeting and convention hotel with more than 200,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space and 1,193 guest rooms. During our recent property upgrade, we installed a new Saflok RFID guest door locking system interfaced with our Schindler elevator system. Schindler’s PORT Technology provides guests with the most efficient elevator service possible to get them to their floor faster. The system also enables greater security because only keycard holders may access the guestroom floors during defined hours of operation and we can lock out specific floors if needed.”

How it works
Hyatt installed Saflok’s Quantum RFID locks paired with Kaba’s System 6000 communications solution to interface keycards with Schindler’s PORT elevator technology. Schindler’s PORT destination-dispatch system reads a guest’s RFID keycard outside one of the eight elevator cars, identifies the guest and their room number, and automatically calls the most appropriate elevator. This saves time by enabling guests to get to and from their floors faster with greater security through keycard identification.

Guest keys become ‘property-wide guest communication solution’
“Kaba’s Saflok integration with Schindler’s PORT elevator technology has never been done at a hotel before. The system transforms the keycard into a property-wide communication and security solution,” said Kerry Hirschy, senior vice president of Kaba Lodging. “Today, Kaba’s RFID locking systems exchange guest data with Schindler’s elevators. In the future, the new hotel technology will connect guests with a host of other property devices to enrich their stay.”
